Ringworm
Ringworm is a fungal infection caused by microorganisms called dermatophytes. This can affect skin on the body (tinea corporis), the scalp (tinea capitis), the groin (jock itch), or the feet (athlete’s foot). Often there are several patches of ringworm on the skin at once.
Scalp ringworm or tinea capitis is defined by developing red, round and flat patches on the scalp and may cause hair to become fragile and that can lead to bald patches. Sometimes scalp ringworm causes dandruff.
Ringworm on the body looks like red, raised, scaly patches and these patches may blister. Patches often have sharply defined edges, that are more red around the outside with normal skin tone in the center. This may create the appearance of a ring. Your skin may also appear unusually dark or light. When your scalp or beard is infected, you may have bald patches. If nails are infected, they become discolored, thick, and even crumble.
Causes:
Direct skin-to-skin contact or contact with contaminated items such as combs, brushes, sheets, unwashed clothing, communal showers, saunas, steam rooms, gymnasium/workout mats or pool surfaces. This fungi thrive in warm moist areas, where people frequently sweat and minor skin injuries occur. It is common in sports like wrestling, gymnastics and yoga. Pets can also carry the fungus: cats, rabbits, dogs and horses are common carriers.
Treatment:
Keep your skin clean and dry. Apply a layer of Blue Star Ointment to all areas that are suspect. Most cases clear up in about 3 days (treating the area 2-3 times a day) however continue treatment for 1 week after the skin is clear.
Ringworm usually responds well to self-care within 4 weeks without having to see a doctor. Because ringworm is contagious be vigilant about washing bed linens, clothing and nightclothes during and a week after infection is gone. A severe or persistent infection may require treatment by a doctor. Antifungal pills may be given. Antibiotics may also be needed to treat related bacterial infections. Infected pets also should be treated. (Blue Star Ointment is safe to use on your pet).
