Eczema
Eczema describes several non-contagious skin conditions where skin is inflamed, red, dry, itchy and small bumps or welts may appear. Stress, irritants (like soaps), allergens, and climate can trigger flare-ups though they are not eczema causes. The causes of Eczema are unknown. Eczema often occurs on the elbows and hands, and in the "bending" areas, such as inside the elbows and knees.
Causes:
No one knows what causes Eczema. However harsh detergents, or powders and perfumes on broken skin can dry out the skin and can exacerbate the condition. Eczema can be brought on and aggravated by excess sun exposure, dry skin, allergic reaction to animals or other air borne allergens.
Treatment:
To reduce itching during a flare up, clean affected area with a non-soap cleanser, blot dry and apply a thin layer of Blue Star Ointment twice daily. Should you experience redness, dilute the strength by adding 1part petroleum jelly. Creams are quickly absorbed into the skin, and therefore need frequent reapplication. Ointments with less water content stay on the skin longer and need fewer applications. Moisturizing gloves (which keep emollients in contact with skin on the hands) can be worn while sleeping.
